Two Measures, Two Outcomes, One Lesson
Electoral Reform: Democracy in Arizona remains at a crossroads.
2024 Ballot Measures
-
Proposition 133
- A legislative attempt to ban open primaries and enshrine partisan primaries into the state constitution.
-
Result: Defeated with 57.8% NO (1,763,710 votes).
-
Proposition 140
- A citizen initiative to require open primaries but would have given the legislature control over general election rules.
-
Result: Rejected with 58.7% NO (1,823,444 votes).
Arizonans Demand Real Reform
- Voters sent a clear message: they want reforms that truly empower them, not partisan power grabs disguised as solutions.
- Half-measures won’t cut it—Arizonans are ready for change that puts voters first. Voters will reject confusing proposals that lack trust and bipartisan support.

What Set Us Apart
While opponents spent over $650,000 to push anti-democracy measures:
- We delivered clear, concise voter education to demystify the ballot.
- Mobilized 1.4 million voters through grassroots outreach (email, text, phone).
- Partnered with a coalition of pro-democracy organizations to amplify our message.
-
Cleared the way for real electoral reform by defeating Prop 133

The Road Ahead
The defeat of Prop 133 is a win for independent and third-party voters, but Prop 140’s failure highlights the need for thoughtful, effective reform. Moving forward, we will:
-
Advance meaningful electoral reforms that empower all Arizonans.
-
Expand grassroots voter education to ensure informed decisions.
-
Defend against future attacks on voter access and election integrity.
These victories and lessons strengthen our resolve to build a fairer, more inclusive democracy. Together, we’ll keep fighting for Arizona’s future.
